Don’t Wait Until the Pigeons Move in, Have Your Solar Panels Birdproofed When They’re Installed

Pigeons are a huge problem in Townsville as they have a habit of nesting under people’s solar panels, making a mess of their roof, filling their gutters with droppings and debris, and limiting the efficiency of the panels. Once the pigeons have moved in, rectifying the issue can be a mammoth task. This is why we recommend having solar skirts installed when you first have your panels installed.

The Solar Skirt system that Gutter-Vac uses requires no gluing or screwing to attach the skirting to your panels. This means the panels will not be damaged in any way and there is no risk of voiding the warranty.

If you’ve recently had solar panels installed and know that there is a high number of pigeons in your area then feel free to give Gutter-Vac a call. We’ll be happy to provide you with a free quote and answer any questions you may have. You can contact us on 0412 309 379 or email us at townsville@guttervac.com.au.

Preparing Your Home for Bushfire Season in Townsville

It’s been another bad week for bushfires in Townsville. The hot and windy weather, along with the very low humidy is creating the perfect environment for fires to break out. This week a couple of these out-of-control fires have come quite close to people’s homes and so we cannot stress enough the importance of preparing your home for bushfire season.

Often, people don’t realise that the majority of homes lost during a bushfire are lost to ember attack. This means that even if the fire is not directly near your home, you are still at risk. Embers can travel several kilometres on the wind and catch alight on any flammable material they land on. Therefore, it is important that your gutters and roof are kept clean of any leaf litter and debris. Any debris in your gutters can easily catch fire which can quickly spread into your ceiling cavity and have devastating effects.

If you require assistance preparing your home for bushfire season feel free to call us for a free quote. Gutter-Vac Townsville can remove any debris from your gutters, downpipes and roof, disposing of the mess for you. We can also prune any over-hanging plants that may be putting your home at further risk.

The gutters look absolutely fabulous!

Another happy customer providing great feedback!

“I am very happy with the job. You were professional, patient, punctual and thorough and very easy to deal with. The before-and-after photographs are a wonderful idea. They clearly show how effective your cleaning was and they show the condition of the gutters generally. I am a fan”.

“My God the gutters were bad though, weren’t they! Should have been done ages ago. In a way, it is surprising the gutters themselves are not in worse shape. And thanks for the thumbs-up for the roof generally. It is good to know it is all OK”.

Thanks again.

How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters?

There are a few factors you should consider when deciding on the frequency of cleaning your gutters.

  1. Are there a lot of trees near the house or in the neighbours yard that blows over to you?
  2. If you have trees are they deciduos or have debris falling all year round?
  3. Are your gutters hung correctly to allow the flow of water to the down pipe? You would be surprised at how many gutters we see that hold water and the sludge and debris along with it.
  4. Are you in shade for most of winter, therefore it is always damp? Moss loves to grow in conditions like these.

Most properties get away with an annual gutter clean. When some of these conditions above are present, it might require a gutter clean more frequently.

The picture above is a six monthly clean. The trees in the area are gum trees and they leave their debris of sticks and leaves on the roof and gutter all year round. This client is prolonging the life of their gutter and preventing any possible water damage that could happen if left for an annual clean.

Protecting your Solar Panels from Pigeons in Far North Queensland

Here in Cairns and Far North Queensland one of the major problems we come across on people’s roofs are pigeon and myna bird infestations under and around their solar panels. The warm, confined space under your solar panels provides the perfect place for these pesky birds to build their nests. Very quickly a couple of pigeons can turn into a huge, noisy, smelly mess. The mess under the panels can be bad enough, but an infestation often leads to a whole range of other issues.

Droppings covering panels

With a lot of pigeons comes a lot of pigeon droppings which can end up covering your solar panels. This can severely impact their efficiency or damage them permanently, costing you quite a lot in the long run.

Droppings and discarded eggs clogging gutters

Droppings and old eggs that have rolled out from under your solar panels can also end up covering your roof, filling your gutters, and clogging your downpipes. Again, this is messy and smelly, but it can also lead to rusting gutters and water leaking into your ceiling cavity.

Health Concerns

On top of the damage pigeons can cause to your property, they also pose a very serious health risk to you and your pets. Pigeons are known to carry lice and diseases which can easily spread to you or your pets if the problem is left untreated.

How our Gutter-Vac team can combat these issues

Our team is equipped to safely and efficiently clean your solar panels and roof. We can also use our high-powered vacuum to remove any droppings and debris from under your solar panels and in your gutters. This mess is completely removed from your property and disposed of for you. Finally, Gutter-Vac Cairns can close any gaps between panels and install solar skirts which will prevent any pests from moving back in.

Often people are completely unaware that they have an infestation under their solar panels until the damage is already quite extreme. So, if you have solar panels and know that there is a high number of pigeons or myna birds in your area, or you suspect you may have an infestation, give us a call. We can check your roof for you and provide a free quote for any work that we think needs doing.
