Why are your gutters rusting?

Gutters are out in the elements and it is only natural that because they are made of metal and exposed to all the weather that over time they will begin to rust, but you can slow this process down with a regular gutter clean.

When leaves and dirt build up in your gutters, along with rain water, this debris breaks down into a nutrient rich mud type of sludge.  It is this sludge that can cause a problem for your gutters.

This sludge will sit on the bottom of your gutters and not wash away.  Over time this sludge along with other debris will build up causing blockages in your gutters which means water will simply sit or pool within your gutter.

All of these things will shorten the lifespan of your gutters and speed up the rusting process of your gutters.

Now, if you have your gutters cleaned regularly, with our wet/dry vacuum system we will be able to remove this debris, including the sludge.  This means water will not sit in your gutters, but simply run through the gutter system, down the downpipes and away from your property.

A simple gutter clean at least once a year could potentially add years of life to your gutters and slow the rusting process.  Replacing gutters can be an expensive exercise so the more years you can get out of them, the better and a yearly vacuum gutter clean would be a wise investment in the lifespan of your gutters.

5 Tell-tale Signs your gutters need cleaning – right now!

With gutters up high and hard to see, it can be difficult to know if it’s time to clean them. Here are our Top 5 Tell-tale Signs that your gutters need cleaning – right now!

  1. You’ve spotted plants growing in your gutters

If your gutters have plants growing in them, it means they are in desperate need of a clean. Not only are gutter growths unattractive, their weight can cause irreparable damage, ultimately shortening the life of your gutters.

  • Your gutters overflow when it rains

If your gutters overflow when it rains, it means rain water can’t drain away and that’s a sure sign your gutters are blocked. Water spilling over the sides of your gutters can cause damage to your ceiling cavity, internal walls and the electricals of your home. So if you see your gutters overflowing when it rains, get them professionally cleaned before you have even bigger problems to fix.

  • Unwanted visitors are living in your gutters

Over time, dirt and sludge build-up in your gutters, attracting insects like mosquitoes, cockroaches and beetles. In turn, they can attract other pests – even snakes.  If you spot bugs, birds or other animals hanging around your gutters, it’s a good indication your gutters need professional cleaning.

  • Sagging gutters

If it looks like your gutters are drooping, it means your gutters are in urgent need of a thorough clean. Gutters that are full of debris for an extended amount of time twist and bend under the weight. If your gutters are sagging, it’s important to book a professional gutter clean before you have bigger gutter problems.

  • You don’t remember the last time your gutters were cleaned

If you can’t remember the last time your gutters were cleaned, chances are they need a clean. Just give us a call. We’ll pop over to assess the situation and give you a free quote. We’ll even take photos so you can see for yourself what’s happening up there.

Gutter Cleaning at Bilgola Plateau

It’s an amazing experience every time we get on a roof to complete a gutter clean – especially at locations like Bilgola Plateau where we look out at exceptional views like this one.

This Bilgola Plateau property requires an annual gutter clean. Maintaining the yearly cleaning schedule will prolong the life of this property’s gutters and therefore delay the cost of gutter replacement for the owner. That’s because our regular gutter clean includes vacuum cleaning any debris such as leaves and twigs, as well as the removal of corrosive sludge.

This property also has a number of solar panels so while we are on the roof, we check to see if the solar panels need cleaning as well.

Like your gutters, solar panels experience build-up of grime, dust and other materials. This creates a film over the panels – impacting their efficiency by as much as 40%.

When combining a gutter clean with a solar panel clean, we offer a reduced rate per solar panel.

But we don’t just limit our solar panel inspection to cleaning. We also check if the panels are cracked or broken. If we see anything of concern, we’ll bring it to your attention.

If you would like a free quote for a gutter or solar panel clean, please call Gutter-Vac Upper North Shore & Northern Beaches 1300 654 253

Roof Reports Beneficial After Gutter Clean

We understand it’s hard to know what’s happening on your roof without getting up there. That’s why we inspect and report on each customer’s roof while we’re cleaning their gutters.

Recently, one of our customers experienced the benefits of our complementary Roof and Gutter Report when we found the roof valley flashing had slipped into their gutter.

Roof valleys are the V-shapes on roofs where the roof line changes direction. Flashing is installed in the roof valleys to prevent water entering the roof cavity. Not only had the slipped flashing left a gap in the roof, it had become a blockage point in the gutter. Both problems would lead to water damage as soon as it rained!

The slipped flashing happened at a rental property. Using our report, the property manager was able to instruct a roofing plumber so the problem could be fixed.

Whenever we complete a gutter clean, we provide a Roof and Gutter Report for our customers. If there is an issue that requires further investigation or work, the Report will advise you.

We also provide a Before and After Photo Report. It’s your guarantee that we have done a great job. It’s also a valuable tool if you need to make an insurance claim as it creates a file of evidence to prove you regularly maintain your property.

Regular gutter cleaning with Gutter-Vac Upper North Shore & Northern Beaches is more than just a gutter clean. It’s a safe-guard that ensures your roof and gutters remain in good shape.

Our 5 step gutter cleaning process. Your guarantee – we will do what we promise.

  1. We Vacuum Everything
At Gutter-Vac Upper North Shore & Northern Beaches we literally vacuum everything out of your gutters! That’s all the dust, sludge, dirt, mud, leaves and twigs. Then we take it with us when we leave – unless you’d like to use it in your compost bin.
  2. Downpipes
We also clear the top end of your downpipes – down to the first bend where 95% of blockages occur. So next time there’s a heavy downpour, you can be confident your downpipes are clear and ready for work.
  3. Roof Valleys
Next we do the roof valleys. They’re important as they are the most likely place for water to get into the ceiling. In heavy rain, leaves can become stuck in roof valleys. This has a damming affect which can lead to water entering your roof cavity. In older homes, roof valleys are usually made from galvanised steel which will rust if leaves and debris are allowed to collect on them. This will cause leaks. (You’ll know if your roof valleys aren’t working efficiently as you will see a stain on your ceiling.)
  4. No Mess
Lastly, we commit to leaving no mess behind – which includes inside your roof cavity. (Operators who use blowers to clean the gutters blow leaves into the roof cavity where it dries out to become a potential fire hazard!)
  5. Report
Finally, we’ll give you a Roof & Gutter Report. It will include before and after photos as well as a personalised Preventative Maintenance Program with every standard gutter cleaning service.
