Are your Gutters Breaking the Law?

I often hear people say they don’t have any trees near their house, so they don’t really need to clean their gutters. Well if that was the case, then their gutters would be breaking the law … The Law of Superposition, that is!

The Law of Superposition is used by archaeologists to describe the process of how artefacts are older the deeper they’re buried in the earth. Artefacts are buried in layers formed by Mother Nature that can help date them.

What’s that got to do with your gutters?

As you know, mother nature is constantly blowing around ash, dust, pollen, seeds, dirt and other airborne pollutants – just look at the window sill after a week or two without wiping it. This also settles in your gutters where it forms a layer much like that on your window sill.

The difference though is water. When it rains, all this material becomes trapped in the water forming a nutrient dense sludge – perfect conditions for slime and algae to thrive in!

It only takes one piece of roofing metal, a screw, nail, a nut dropped by a bird – any obstruction that prevents the water from draining completely – for an eco-system to form in the gutter. The algae and slime will thrive during the wet months, then as Summer arrives and the ponded water evaporates, they dry to form a hard-crusty layer in the gutter. You now have your first micro-Superposition layer right there in your gutter, yet from the ground perspective all appears fine!

Next year the same process repeats – Mother Nature never rests – only the sediments build even quicker. A brand-new home can become full of sludge, and growing grass within a few short years – without a tree in sight! It’s usually not until people see grass growing that they realise there’s a problem.

Unfortunately, gutter-screens won’t stop this process any more than flyscreens stop dust reaching your window-sill … only with regular housekeeping – cleaning the gutters – are you able to truly break the Law of Superposition!

Norfolk Island Pine ‘noodles’

I’m constantly surprised at what my Gutter-Vac machine, takes a liking to.
On today’s menu was a (not-so-fresh) batch of Norfolk pine noodles in a soup of slime and sludge (of course!), with a burp-a-licious side order of freshly seeding, grass!

To be perfectly honest, I was initially a bit nervous about feeding my machine the pine noodles, but as it turned out I had nothing to worry about – they were slurped down without any hesitation whatsoever!

That is, until it choked on an over-ambitious helping of grass/moss near the end of the job.
Darn, isn’t that always the way?

OK, so this was my first ‘blocked hose’ situation – a quick call to Thomas from Gutter-Vac Midland and, after following his advice, I was back on the roof feeding the machine more of those pine noodles (but going easy on the moss-balls).

Pretty soon, it was another JOB DONE!

Seriously, Norfolk island pines are synonymous with coastal towns right around Australia – they’re great trees. But if you’ve got one anywhere near the house or building, you’re going to have a gutter problem sooner or later, probably sooner! The ‘noodles’ don’t break down easily and are very acidic – they’ll quickly start to corrode your gutters.

You know what I’m about to say – regular cleaning of your gutters is the ONLY way to protect your gutters, and Gutter-Vac South West WA have the right equipment to get the job done. Give us a call !

Life’s great, see you next time …

ps – How’s this for a great beachside dining location !

Colin comes full circle

Busselton resident Colin Asplin was first introduced to the Gutter-Vac concept while living in the Perth Hills in 2012.  ‘Living in a fire-prone area, we understood the importance of keeping our home prepared in the event of a bushfire and, as I was working long hours in the city during the mining boom, decided it was more convenient and safer to call in a professional gutter cleaning service to get the job done right’  Colin says.

‘Thomas Kessell (a local Gutter-Vac franchise owner) showed up on time and did a fantastic job. He even repaired a loose finial which my wife had been nagging me to fix for ages!’

After twenty years working in the mining industry, it was time for a change, so Colin and his family moved south to his home town of Busselton. ‘It was while I was looking for opportunities here I discovered there was a Gutter-Vac franchise available. I didn’t hesitate’ Colin adds. ‘I guess you could say I was so impressed with the service, I bought a franchise.’
